Please accompany me. There’s an old saying, “Never underestimate what a regular grunt team can do.” This is a US Army statement, but it also applies to the US Marine Corps. In my father’s time (USMC 1933–1966-Sgt Maj ret), it was routine for the Marines to fire a 20-inch black with iron sights from 1,000 yards. Until WWII, the Marine Corps used ’03 Springfields, but when they got their M-1 (same ammo), they did the same. The M-1 is not as good a platform as the Springfield. However, it is probably the best semi-auto platform ever made. (Still my favorite rifle). In the early ’60s, my Force Recon crew fired impromptu (standing) from 500 yards with iron sights, and no one missed the 20-inch black. We did this with ’03 Springfields, M-1s, M-14s and M-16s. We used a slingshot, but we couldn’t put our slingshot arm on our body. (We weren’t as good as my father’s Marines, but not too bad). My eyes aren’t that good today, but with glasses I can still lie down and shoot a 20-inch black shot prone to 20-inch black shots using an M-1 and iron sights. One final note – none of these guns have been verified. They were standard weapons, ready-to-use weapons. Some came with cosmoline on them right out of the box. One more point: It was after WWII that the Marine Corps created a Sniper MOS.
